How to Write the Perfect Wedding Vows

Wedding vows are a meaningful part of every wedding ceremony. The moment when the couple expresses their love for one another, make promises to each other and commit to each another for the rest of their lives. We’ve all been to weddings and heard the traditional vows of promising to be there for one another in sickness and in health, but recently couples have decided to forgo the traditional vows and write some of their own.

If you are staring at a blank paper or googling ideas, we have you covered! Our staff at the Windsor Ballroom of East Windsor, NJ, created the perfect outline to be your guide to writing the perfect vows.

1. Start with a strong statement of what this person means to you.

Your best friend, soulmate, other-half, partner in crime, etc.

2. State what you love about your partner.

It can be physical features such as their eyes, smile or laugh. It can be personality traits such as their sense of humor, kind gestures or honesty. It can even be how they make you feel such as comforted, loved, or seen. If you still need inspiration, think about what made you fall in love or how you knew they were the one. You only need a few qualities. If you list them all, you would miss your cocktail hour!

3. Tell a Love Story

This is a great moment to bring up how you met, your first kiss, when you knew you were falling in love, etc. It will bring you back to that special moment that led you to forever and give your guests insight into your love story. If you are looking to add humor, this is a good place to tie it in. Maybe there’s a funny story about your nervous sweats on the first date or how you met at a Jersey Shore club fist-pumping the night away.

4. Consider the future and mention specific things the two of you will do together.

Think about what you’re looking forward to in the married life or special things you want to share with your person. Consider your goals and aspirations such as raising a family or moving into a home together. Also mention things about your current relationship that you vow to do forever such as frequent traveling or weekly date nights. Give your guests an insight into your relationship and your favorite things to do as a couple to grow your relationship. Use phrases like “with you”, “I will” or “together we will.”

5. Make your Promises.

Be clear and specific when making these promises to your partner and vow to stick to them. Use phrases like “I promise”, “I vow” and “I pledge.” Include some serious, romantic vows such as “I vow to always support you” or “I promise to love you and stick by your side through everything.” Then add in some personalized ones that are specific to your relationship. It could be “I promise to kill every bug that we find in the house”, “I promise to never steal the covers, unless you’re hogging them” or “I promise to always let you eat the last french fry.”

6. Reassure your partner.

Don’t forget to add that you will be there when times get tough. When work is challenging, when they are sick or hurt. Remember this is for better or for worse, in sickness and in health.

7. End your vows with one last promise.

The promise of forever and until death do us part. “As long as we both shall live.”
